Supporting all students
Lucy has just started a Master’s in Fine Art, following her graduation from the undergraduate course at Newcastle University in the summer of 2021.
She is also a recipient of an Opportunity Scholarship, established to empower highly motivated, enthusiastic students from all backgrounds to fully enjoy a Newcastle University education, and made possible by our alumni community. This is her story.
Newcastle University’s Fine Art School is well renowned, and I grew up in the area, so starting my studies here was a no-brainer. During my undergraduate course, I was able to really get to know the Newcastle art scene and in my fourth and final year I spent a lot of time in the studio, which I enjoyed and wanted to continue, which is why I applied to do a Master’s.
Throughout my studies, I’ve stayed living at home on the outskirts of the city. The Opportunity Scholarship has been a big help in covering travel costs and means I can put some money aside in case my car ever needs any work done on it.
I sought out the scholarship when I was in my fourth year of my undergraduate degree. I wasn’t sure how funding worked for postgraduate education, and I was a bit worried about how I would be able to carry on with my studies. I thought I might have to up my hours at my part-time job, and I was concerned about juggling that alongside my timetable.
Being awarded the scholarship was a huge weight off my shoulders. I still work on Sundays, but it means my weekdays can be fully focused on my art and spending time in the studio.
Thanks to the donors who support the Opportunity Scholarships, the decision on whether or not to carry on with my studies was made a lot easier for me, and I’m really looking forward to the next two years at Newcastle.
