Proud to be a University of Sanctuary

Newcastle University is proud to be a University of Sanctuary, providing a safe community for students and academics affected by war, conflict and persecution to learn and thrive.

We all watch in horror as conflict destroys communities around the world. Our first thoughts are with those living in danger: families forced to flee their homes; individuals bravely taking a stand against persecution; communities suffering devastating loss.

The terrible events in Ukraine have sharpened our resolve and commitment to supporting members of the Newcastle University community who are affected by global conflict, including both current and future students and staff.

Making a difference

Newcastle is an active member of the UK University of Sanctuary Network and our existing Sanctuary programme seeks to support those in greatest need by:

  • Awarding Sanctuary Scholarships to cover full tuition fees for students from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds so they can access higher education and reach their potential.
  • Providing emergency hardship funding to students who are displaced or struggling financially as a result of war and conflict, including students affected by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
  • Offering practical, emotional and wellbeing support to students and colleagues who have been displaced as a result of persecution or conflict.
  • Funding CARA (Council for At Risk Academics) fellowships to researchers so they can continue their academic pursuits safely.
  • Organising volunteering opportunities for students to support refugee children and families living in the North East region.

At Newcastle University we are committed to helping the communities we work in. We believe everyone who joins our community should experience a safe and welcoming environment to thrive in their education or reach their research potential. As conflict continues to grow across the globe, we need our staff, students, alumni and friends to come together and ensure this invaluable support continues.
