Serving our local and global community

Our University has been the beating heart of Newcastle for almost 200 years. Central to everything we do is a desire to understand and benefit society. We work to improve the economy, health and cultural richness of the places and communities with which we work.

We have trained generations of doctors, teachers and engineers who have made a difference in the North East and beyond. Every day, our alumni make a positive impact to their communities around the world, inspired by our commitment to social justice.

Newcastle students and colleagues give thousands of hours to volunteer to local projects each year. This includes teaching English as a second language to our refugee community.

We build partnerships across business, education, government and communities to make a positive impact.

Making a difference

We are committed to helping the communities we work in, in the North East and across the globe.

Our home region of the North East has the lowest rates of young people going to University in the country. Improving access to higher education, whether at Newcastle University or elsewhere, is a big focus of our work.

We're proud to see this spirit in everyone at Newcastle University, from our students to our world-leading researchers. Here are just some of the ways we've taken action for social justice recently:

  • We have a long-standing commitment to offering educational, research and engagement opportunities to people fleeing violence and persecution and have been awarded the University of Sanctuary status.
  • In partnership with IntoUniversity and Northumbria University, we have established a new learning centre to raise aspirations of young people in the North East.
  • Student-led initiative North East Solidarity and Teaching (N.E.S.T) offers practical support and English lessons for the local refugee community. In December 2021, N.E.S.T raised over £6,500 in just two weeks to buy Christmas gifts and essential care packs for asylum-seeking families.
  • Newcastle University is part of the Council for At Risk Academics. We help academics fleeing from discrimination and persecution in some of the world's most dangerous places.
