2023 marks the launch of Fine Art 100

This is a four-year-long celebration of the creation and awarding of the very first BA (Hons) of Fine Art at Newcastle University, a first of its kind in Britain.

In 1923 this was a radical step that placed Fine Art education and research on an equal footing with other academic disciplines within the University setting. It is lent even more significance in terms of gender equality as the first candidate to be awarded a BA Fine Art degree in 1927 after four years of study, was a woman.

It was the first of a series of innovations that have kept Fine Art at Newcastle at the forefront of academic and creative practice in the UK.

Supporting student access

Creative agility and artistic responsibility are more important than ever within today’s shifting social, environmental, technological and cultural landscapes.

Looking to the next 100 years, we want to ensure that Fine Art at Newcastle University remains an inclusive and diverse place for artists of the future to think, create, experiment and thrive.

We are launching the Fine Art 100 Fund to support our creative and civic vision for fair and equal access to Fine Art education at Newcastle University for all students.

We believe that art is for everyone. By supporting the Fine Art 100 Fund, you can ensure that students from under-represented backgrounds will have the same opportunities of access to high-quality education and opportunities in the creative sector.

Donate to the Fine Art 100 Fund today

The Fine Art 100 fund is devised as a flexible fund that can tackle the most pressing financial needs of our student community as they arise. Your generosity could provide bursaries for students, materials grants, micro exhibition grants, mentoring and professional development training and support.

  • Support Making: Our students buy their own materials for making work in the Fine Art studios. The cost of this can be prohibitive for some students. Your support will help students with purchasing materials needed for their studies.
  • Support professional development: Exhibiting and showing artwork in public settings is an important aspect of Fine Art practice and for sharing a diversity of creative voices. Your support will enable students to gain invaluable professional practice experiences with gallery partners through exhibition microgrants.

Fine Art 100 celebrations

Over the next four years, we will be curating a series of events with alumni and partners that celebrate the innovation, value and contribution of Fine Art at Newcastle.

Fine Art 100 will celebrate the past, look at the present, and question what the next 100 of Fine Art education and research might be.
